Endurance For Life Newsletter
Greetings Athletes,

Dean's had a busy month. From kicking off The North Face Endurance Challenge in Madison, to presenting the DK Silicon Valley marathon, to hosting the Fit Business Awards at the state Capital, to being a featured speaker at the Banff Film Festival in Canada, to giving the keynote talk at The Running Event in Austin, there's been no slowing him down. Of course, he's also made time for a little fitness, running both the Chicago and NYC marathons (oh yeah, he ran the Chicago marathon twice). Go Karno!

What's New:
It's Who You Are

"It could never happen to me." Most of us have probably had such rationalizations, me likely being the worst offender. "Hit by a car in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere?" Nah, not me. Truth is, probably me. That's why I'm happy to be partnering with Road ID. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast (runner, cyclist, triathlete, waterman, rock climber, hiker, basically anyone who gets after life) get Road ID on you!
Karno Kids Update:
"Run for the Kids"

Karno Kids, Dean's personal charity, is enabling you to "Run for the Kids" in your daily training or in honor of your next event. The goal of Karno Kids is to improve the health and wellness of our youth and to preserve and restore the environment for their ongoing use and enjoyment. on you!

Now there are two new ways to get involved with Karno Kids. First, we are holding a fundraising drive through Active Giving. By donating and "Running for the Kids" you can earn yourself some very cool North Face gear branded with the Karno Kids logo. $100 donation gets you a training top, $200 gets you a training top and shorts, and $500 donation gets you the Karno Kids Kit. (Top, shorts, and jacket). To donate to a great cause or for more information go to the "Karno Kids Giving Site" today.

The second way to support Karno Kids is by registering and recording your workouts under the "Karno Kids" banner at Plus3networks.com. Karno Kids will match donations of up to $5,000. Here's the important caveat and where you come in. While we are not asking you to donate any money, we are asking you to log your workouts and activities through Plus 3 to pass along the funding. The way we see it, this is a winning combination for everybody involved! Register today at Plus3networks.com to help get our kids outside and moving.

Fueling the Fire:
With Thanksgiving right around the corner, here's a recipe for healthy pumpkin pie, an American favorite:

Pie Crust Ingredients:

- 1 Pie Crust Ingredients
- 2 cups Kashi® Good Friends® cereal
- 1/3 cup whole wheat flour
- 3/4 cup shredded coconut
- 1/2 cup organic apple juice concentrate

Filling Ingredients:

- 1 pound firm tofu, drained (use silken tofu for a creamier texture)
- 1 (15 oz) can of organic pumpkin (about 2 cups of fresh-baked pumpkin will work fine too)
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/3 cup honey
- 1/3 cup pure maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice blend

Preheat oven to 350° F. Place the Kashi® Good Friends® cereal in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin or process in a food processor or blender until it is semi-fine in texture. Place the cereal in a bowl and add the remaining crust ingredients. Stir until well mixed. Place in a lightly oiled 9-inch glass pie pan and press into place with a spoon or rubber spatula. Bake at 375° F for 8 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely before filling. Blend all filling ingredients in a food processor until smooth. Pour into the 9-inch pie crust. Bake in a preheated oven at 350° F for about 1 hour. Chill before serving as this will help to firm up the pie.

Did you know?
Joint cartilage is the only tissue in the body that has living cells but no blood supply. To stay healthy, joints need the compression from weight-bearing activities like running to flush out waste products and draw in nutrients.
Quick Take:
If it stinks, eat it. Coniferous veggies, like broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower, contain sulfur and are some of the healthiest on earth.
